THE HELLENIC RADIO & TELEVISION MUSEUM
ILION
The creation of the Hellenic Radio and Television Museum in ERT’s historic facilities in Ilion, aims to highlight it’s valuable heritage through rare audio and visual documentary as well as by exhibiting old machinery and equipment. The two grand spars dominate the existing space and act as landmarks, indicating their special role in the transmission of radio broadcasts. It is the operating system of those two spars that provide us with the inspiration for the architectural composition of the new museum: a mechanical support system for low frequency radiation, in combination with an underground network of copper wires, in a radial arrangement.
The design of the new museum and of the outdoor facilities reveals this underground and “hidden” radial path. This path starting at the main entrance carries the visitor in a historical journey passing through the renovated building of the first Greek radio transmitter and into a pleasant route that takes him to a multi layered Mediterranean planted set made of a succession of scales, flat layers and ramps leading to the new museum building. A water platform defines the end of this trail reflecting part of the museum.
The new museum that occupies an area of 2.880 m2, consists of 4 distinct concrete blocks that mark the end of the radial layout. The galleries have small u-glass openings that control direct sunlight in contrast to the reception hall which is open to the outside. The museum, in addition to the radio and television exhibition, offers a reading room, an amphitheater, a restoration area, a gift shop and a café.
